Driving Tips in Rain: The biggest thing you should know when you are driving in the rain is that you need to slow down. Your visibility is compromised, meaning you cannot see as far ahead of you. The oil deposits on the road are getting wet and spreading on the asphalt so the entire roadway is becoming slicker, and your wet brakes add to this slickness to make stopping much more difficult. Simply reduce your speed to prevent possible accidents.

Turn on your headlights. You should have your headlights turned on when driving in the rain even if it is daytime. Turning your headlights on will increase other drivers ability to see your vehicle. During heavy rains the roads tend to have pools or ponds of water standing on them, this causes hydroplaning. The biggest reason cars hydroplane is people slam on the brakes over one of these pools of water, and the tire is then not getting good traction, when you need to stop during a heavy rainfall try letting off the accelerator and coasting some before gently applying the brakes.

Leave a little more space between your car and the car ahead of you. If your brakes do allow you to slide you want to have enough room to avoid a rear end collision. Replace your windshield wiper blades at least twice a year. Every windshield has minor flaws or chips in it. The rubber blades gliding over these flaws can create bad smears if the blades are wearing thin. This will reduce your ability to see even more.

Make certain that your tires have at least an 1/8” of tread on them. If you are driving around on bald tires you will hydroplane more frequently. Bad tires are one of the biggest causes of auto accidents, and fatalities. When the rain is falling too hard for you to see farther than 3 foot ahead of you, you need to pull over in a safe place and wait for it to let up. When you do not have good visibility of the roadway for more than 3 feet you will not have time to react if there is something in the roadway ahead of you. It is much better to wait out the rain and arrive at your destination a little late, than it is to never arrive there at all. Avoid having loud distractions when you are driving in inclement weather Loud radios and cell phones could take your attention away from the road just long enough for an accident to occur.

Proper maintenance and good driving skills will prevent most accidents that are caused from driving in the rain. If there is any way you can avoid it you do not want to be pulling over and stopping on the side of the roadway. If something does happen to cause you to have to park at the side of the roadway, turn your emergency flashers on. This will increase your visibility to other drivers.
