Getting a Car Loan after Bankruptcy

It is possible to get a car loan after bankruptcy. It can even be a good idea, since taking out a loan and making the payments on time will help to raise your credit score and reestablish your financial responsibility. Many auto dealerships will sell to people who are post-bankruptcy and even do the financing themselves, but you are likely to be stuck with very high interest rates, which means large payments and possibly a very long life to the loan itself. To get the best rates, go through a private bank or lending agency that makes a point of lending to even to people who are currently still going through bankruptcy.

There are some requirements you must meet before getting a loan. For instance, you must be employed. Many banks will want you to have been in your current job for at least a year, so that they know you have a stable income. There will be a minimum required income—not a lot, but enough to insure that you can make your payments. You will also need a checking account. If your last one was closed in the course of your bankruptcy, open a new one. Wait for six months to build a history before applying. You must not have had your previous car repossessed within the last year, except as a part of the bankruptcy. You may need to put some money down. You will not be able to get a loan for a private purchase, only one from a dealership.

The best way to find a lender to finance your car purchase is to search online. You can submit applications and compare quotes right on your computer. Collect at least a month’s worth of pay stubs to prove your employment and income. Do not take the first lender you find, but compare the rates and conditions offered by as many lenders as approve you to be sure that you are getting the best rate possible. One way to get a slightly lower rate or improve your chances of being approved is to have a family member or close friend cosign with you.

After you get your loan, make your payments on time, every time. It’s the only way to restore your credit rating and by the terms of your loan you may find your rate increasing astronomically if you begin missing payment deadlines. After a year or so you can start to look around for opportunities to refinance at a lower rate. If you do have a cosigner, you are especially responsible to pay on time, since your cosigner will be financially responsible for your debts should you default. The last, most important thing to remember is to not purchase a car that is costs more than you can genuinely afford to pay. Whatever the causes of your last bankruptcy, you must be certain that they will not repeat themselves. Your new car can help your credit rating out, but it can also ruin it further if you can’t pay for it.
