International Driving

Driving in a country which is not yours can be tricky even for the safest and most cautious of drivers. The rules, age limits, policies might be different in different countries. You need to be aware of dos and don’ts that exist there. Here we will give you a few tips on how to make your driving on foreign roads hassle free.

While in most countries your original driving license will suffice, some countries require you to have an International Driving Permit which is issued by the American Automobile Association and the National Auto Club. IDP is invalid unless you have your original license with you so make sure you have both.

While renting a car, make sure you have the required auto insurance, as it might be that the insurance you have in your country does not cover for you when you’re out on foreign lands and even if it does, it might not meet the country’s requirement. Insurance is necessary as it’s more likely that you be blamed for any accident that might occur because you are a foreigner.

It’s necessary for you to make a good note of the traffic rules of the country that you will be driving in as what rules apply in one, need not in another. Keep a copy of the traffic rules. To be on the safer side always fasten your seat belt. Some countries require you to flicker your lights before passing or honk before a sharp turn. Find out as to which side of the road you are supposed to drive.

Get familiar with where you are going to drive. It is advisable to contact your embassy to find out the risk zones of the country and keep away from them. Do not pick up strangers or hitch-hikers on the way. Stay alert the whole time; be aware of your surroundings while getting on and off your car. Get familiar with the working of your car so no time is wasted wondering what knob is to be used when.

Always have your basic road safety kit with you along extra water bottles and reserve food. It is essential that you always carry a road map as you might not be able to follow the sign boards if the signs are in the native language. And make sure you have your phone and charger and a number, whose network is recognised in the country. Have your course of journey planned out and gather as much information about the place before going there.

Find out when the peak hours of traffic will be in the city that you are driving in and take your breaks at those times, that way you can have a stress free drive and a much needed rest. Be careful while driving in rains, avoid if you can as you do not know how the roads will be. Be a cautious and safe driver as you’re driving in roads unknown to you.
