Driving Test Tips

Passing your driver’s test can seem a rather daunting task. However, if you follow certain tips and guidelines, you are sure to stay safe and pass your test with flying colors. We have listed certain tips below for you to keep in mind

Steering: Always steer smoothly, no matter where you are driving. Sudden jerks and twists will not lead to a smooth ride, for you or your instructor. This rule applies even when you are backing up or turning. Steer slowly if you must, but do it very smoothly.

Take care while accelerating: If you must speed up, press gently on the accelerator. If you are driving a manual car, this is very important. If you press hard on the accelerator, the vehicle may zoom suddenly and eventually the engine will stall.

Brakes: To avoid a jerky stop, start braking well before the stop line. For braking, put your foot on the brake and press gently. If you press it hard, the vehicle will come to a standstill, and the engine might possibly stall as well. Also make sure that you stop in the correct lane, without blocking the way of traffic behind you.

Changing Gears: While changing a gear, especially in a manual vehicle, make sure to gently take your foot off the clutch, while simultaneously pressing down on the brake or accelerator. This will ensure that the gear box does not start making grinding noises. Incorrect changing of gears can shorten the engine’s life considerably.

Note the speed limit: Always drive below the speed limit. Speeding can lead to accidents if you are not careful enough. In case of inclement or bad weather, make sure to drive well below the speed limit. This is because the speed limits are set keeping fine weather in mind.

Stopping distance: Keep an adequate stopping distance between you and the car in front of you. This is useful in the event that the car in front of you suddenly stalls or brakes. The stopping distance will give you adequate space to stop gently without having to hit the vehicle in front. Follow the two hand rule described in most drivers’ manuals while driving.

Know the correct signals: Before taking you test, study all the traffic signals and rules of the road rigorously. Obey these rules consistently and always stay in the correct lane while driving.

Communicate with the other vehicles: Always communicate with other vehicles using your indicators and horn. You can warn other vehicles of your presence using the horn. If you must make a turn, always keep the indicator ready. This will alert drivers to your presence, who will take necessary steps accordingly.

Keep your eyes on the road: Never take your eyes off the road. Look and identify potential hazards on the road, and do your best to avoid them. If possible, also alert drivers behind you to their presence, so that other drivers will not have a problem as well.

Another important rule is to keep your seat belt on at all times. These little steps may seem inconsequential, but they will save your life. The driving instructor sitting with you will take note of how you follow the above steps.
