Long drives

Long drives can be most soothing and romantic as they provide a respite from the daily bustle in cities and are a good opportunity to have some pleasant family time together. But to ensure that all goes smoothly, there are several precautions one must take to avoid common pitfalls such as your car breaking down in between or you getting lost on the way. A few measures have been given below to make sure you have a safe, comfortable and uninterrupted journey!

Check Your Car: Make sure your car is in prime condition before you head out. It’s never pleasant to have it break down mid-way and stall your journey. Check the brakes and make sure your gas tank is full and all fluids are at the right level.

Get Enough Sleep and Food: To avoid fatigue and sleepiness during your journey, make sure you’ve had an optimum 7-8 hours of sleep and have had enough food. Caffeinated drinks help you stay awake for some time, but eventually one’s mind starts to wander making them lose focus.

Take Breaks in Between: Stop your car every now and then on the way for respite even if you are not sleepy. Having light snacks occasionally will also keep you from feeling sleepy and tired and will refresh you for the rest of the journey.

Share Driving Responsibilities: Take turns with another person when not travelling alone. This way, both of you can get enough rest and feel fresh to drive again by taking regular breaks. Turning the music on and keeping windows open also helps in staying awake as it makes the journey less tiresome and monotonous.

Avoid Alcohol Completely: While you may not be drunk enough to break laws, a couple of beers can be quite harmful before long drives as they make one sleepy after a while.

Never Pull Over on the Road: Especially on highways, never pull over on the road itself but park it off the road. Coming to a stop on the road may be dangerous as it may pose a danger from other vehicles that may come crashing in.

Take a Map Along: When venturing into new areas or cities, make sure you know your way around in advance rather than having to search for it on your way. Outline the route in your map and mark important stops such as gas stations, eateries and motels that you may have to stop at. Update your route on this map as you go so that you are always aware of the exact place you are in.

Check State Traffic and Driving Laws: When you go to another state, the traffic laws there may be different from ones you have been following. For example, in some states, using cell phones while driving is legal while in some it is not. Make sure you have complete information regarding these as ignorance cannot get you off in case of violation.
