Tips for young drivers

Most accidents involve young, inexperienced drivers. Many of these accidents can be prevented if the driver learns the safety rules and follows them to the letter. After all, safety is paramount. Listed below are some tips that young drivers should follow to stay safe.

Wear your seat belts: Be sure to never drive without wearing your seat belt first. According to recent studies, close to 80 percent of all Americans do not wear their seat belts while driving.

Always drive below the speed limit: Speeding is generally the cause in most accidents. Be sure to never go above the speed limit. The speed limit was decided keeping the traction and banking of the road in mind. If you go too fast, your car will skid. Also, the most common offense in the US is driving above the speed limit. You can save yourself much time and hassle if you just follow the rules of the road.

Take note of the weather conditions: In the case of inclement weather conditions, drive well below the speed limit. This is because your reaction time is increased in rainy or foggy conditions. Slowing down will increase the stopping distance between vehicles, reducing the chances of accidents.

Pay full attention to the road: More often than not, accidents occur because the drivers get distracted. You must take care to keep away from all distractions when you drive. If you have to look for items in the car or have to talk on your cell phone, pull over to the side of the road first. Set your music stations and other multimedia before you start driving. This is to make sure you do not have to take your eyes off the road to change the music. If other people are distracting you, do not let them drive in your car.

Be sure of where you are going: Before you start driving, be sure to note exactly how to get to your destination. This is easier than having to stop in the middle of the road and ask a pedestrian for directions. You could invest in a GPS system to help reach your destination easily.

Be careful when taking turns: Many accidents occur at crossroads when people take their turns incorrectly. Be sure that you are in a correct passing zone before you pass another vehicle. It is illegal for you to pass another vehicle from the right. Never pass a vehicle on hills or at intersections either. This is because you cannot easily see oncoming traffic, which could prove dangerous. Also, make sure that you use the correct indicator before taking a turn. If you are not in the correct lane, do not make the turn. Shift slowly into the correct lane before attempting to make the turn.

Do not drink and drive: Enough emphasis can never be given to such a rule. If you or any of your friends are drunk, do not drive. Even a single drink can cause fatigue and other side-effects.

If one follows the above rules carefully, any young driver can stay safe on the road.
