Driving Tips in Rain: Have you ever wanted to just roll down your windows and cruise through the rain? Just the thought of water spraying against your face as you zoom down the road is ecstatic isn’t it? Well, you are one of the many in the world who want to do just that. Driving in the rain can be a lot of fun but if you slip on a corner, there can be disaster. Follow a few tips and rest assured, you can go ahead and enjoy that drive in the rain you have been waiting for.

Control your speed: The first thing to do if you want to drive safely in the rain is to slow down. Yes, it sounds amazing to just zoom at a high speed in the rain but if you want to be safe, slow down. This is mainly because, cars take a longer time to stop when you brake on wet roads, and you need to slow down at curves and turns to avoid accidents. As a convention, it is advisable to drive at no more than 60% of your regular speed when it is raining.

Avoid Braking: We know this sound ridiculous but don’t brake when the road is wet and slippery. This will just cause your car to slip, skid and spin out of control. Instead, take your foot off the gas and if you are driving manual transmission, go down a gear. Drivers all over accept that braking in the rain is dangerous and the best way to control your speed is to release the accelerator.

Stick to your route: Off road paths and muddy roads tend to become soft and fill up with puddles when it rains. If you have to drive in the rain, stick to proper roads and even if you have an SUV, avoid entering off beat paths or jungle routes as you can get stuck. Nothing is worse than getting stranded in a jungle while it rains!

Wading through water: The rain occasionally brings with it a flow of water on the roads and this could be extremely dangerous to ford through. Even if your car is capable of handling flowing water, never enter it unless you can see the ground beneath the flow. There have been cases where cars were swept off the road when they entered a flow in the rain. If you must wade through water, do it on a low gear and a high power engine.

Gentle controlling: When driving in wet weather, go light on the controls, especially the steering, brake and gas. Never clutch the wheel too hard as this might make you lose control. Also, avoid accelerating too quickly and keep an eye on the gears if you are driving stick. Should you get stuck in mud or the like, be liberal in using the 4WD if your car has it.

Apart from keeping your car in good condition, look out for oil marks on roads, especially if it rains after a long time. These tend to form on intersections that are polished and can easily cause a car to slip.
