DRIVING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS: Ensure that your vehicle is in a good driving condition. Check the fuel gauge, engine oil, brake oil, transmission, steering. Make sure the windshields and mirrors are clean. See to it that the tires are in good condition, and are inflated to right pressure. Adjust your rear view mirror and side view mirror. Wear a seat belt before driving, and ensure your passengers, both front and rear, do as well.

DO NOT drink and drive. You put yourself and other drivers and pedestrians in danger. Similarly, drive only when you are completely active and alert. Carry your driver’s license all the time. Some state laws also require you to carry the car’s insurance documents.

Driving precautions

Drive on the right side of the road, in a particular lane. Keep your eyes on the road. Keep them active all the time, checking for traffic in the rear from the rear view mirrors, sideways for incoming traffic at intersections. DO NOT use your cell phones, which causes distraction and cause an accident. It is compulsory to switch on your headlights in rainy, foggy, snowy weather. Keep them on dim while approaching a vehicle or when on an intersection. High beam lights distract and irritate other drivers. Use your indicators while changing lanes, in traffic intersections and on any turn you make. On a 4 way intersections, the car arriving first gets to leave first. Do not overtake a school bus from any direction and stop when it is in a stationary position, with the stop sign out and red lights flashing. Similarly, go slow in front of school. Keep under the speed limits. Don’t exceed the marked speed limit. Bad weather reduces visibility and deteriorates roads. Watch out for potholes and slippery roads. Keep safe distances from the vehicle ahead of you to avoid rear ending in case of sudden braking.

Road Signs

Red means stop, yellow means slow down and stop, and Green means go. Look for turn signal for left or right turns at signals. If there are no signs, then you can take a free right turn if there are no vehicles approaching from left. Road lines are painted yellow in the middle and white on the edges. Stay between the lines and in your lane. A dotted yellow line in the middle means you can pass the car in front of you, if there is no vehicle coming from the opposite side. A double solid line means neither side can pass. Memorize various road signs, since you need to identify them from shape and size only.

Freeways

While entering/exiting a freeway from the entry ramp, indicate with lights, and be at average traffic speed. A slow moving vehicle is a danger to other fast moving car in the freeway. Slow drivers should drive on the exit lanes of freeway, which are slowest.
